Why You’re Losing Brow or Lash Hair – And What to Do About It

If you’ve been noticing your lashes or brows thinning out, falling out, or just not growing the way they used to, you’re not alone.

There are quite a few reasons this can happen, and many of them are fixable once you know the root cause.

✨ And if you’re really serious about growing stronger, fuller brows or lashes, make sure to scroll to the end—we’ve included a simple nightly Lash & Brow Growth Routine you can start today.

1. Poor Blood Circulation

Healthy hair growth starts with good blood flow to the hair follicles. If your circulation is sluggish—due to lack of stimulation, tension in the face, or even sleeping on one side constantly—your lashes and brows might not be getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to grow.

Tip: Lightly brushing your lashes and brows with a clean spoolie daily can help stimulate circulation and wake up those follicles.

2. Hormonal Shifts

Hormonal fluctuations can happen for many reasons—stress, postpartum changes, stopping hormonal birth control, or underlying imbalances. These shifts can disrupt the natural growth cycle of brow and lash hairs, with low estrogen, thyroid issues, or adrenal fatigue all playing a role.

🧠 Chronic stress is a major factor. It can throw your hormones out of balance, increase cortisol levels, and signal your body to conserve energy—often pulling resources away from "non-essential" things like hair growth. Over time, this can lead to more shedding, slower regrowth, and thinning.

If you’ve noticed more shedding than usual or that your brows have changed shape over time, hormones (and stress) might be part of the picture.

3. Build-Up of Makeup & Dead Skin Cells

Buildup around the brows and lashes doesn’t just come from makeup. Dry skin, natural oils, dust, and pollution all accumulate throughout the day—especially if you don’t cleanse properly. Not cleaning off your makeup at night adds even more to this layer, which can lead to irritation and clogged follicles over time.

This buildup can form a physical barrier that deprives the follicle of oxygen and nutrients, both of which are essential for healthy growth. If the follicle can’t breathe or be nourished properly, it slows—or stops—producing new hair. Over time, this can result in thinner, weaker hair, as the follicles are not in an ideal state for consistent growth.

Tip: Clean your brows and lashes every night with a gentle cleanser to keep your follicles healthy and clear.

4. Diet & Internal Health

Your brows and lashes need nutrients to grow, just like the hair on your head. If your body is low in key vitamins and minerals—like iron, zinc, biotin, or omega-3s—it will prioritize vital organs over hair growth.

Crash dieting, restrictive eating, or chronic inflammation can all affect how your hair behaves.

Too much sugar in the diet can also lead to inflammation in the body, which is linked to a variety of health issues—including hair thinning and loss. Chronic inflammation can disrupt the natural hair growth cycle and weaken the follicles over time.

Tip: Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, nuts and seeds, eggs, fatty fish, and plenty of water.

5. Harsh Products & Dirty Makeup

Makeup that’s expired, filled with harsh chemicals, or not properly cleaned off can irritate your skin and damage follicles. This goes for mascara, brow pencils, cleansers, and especially products that contain heavy oils or drying alcohols.

Some brow pencils and makeup products are known to cause brow hair loss in certain individuals, especially if used daily or if they contain drying or irritating ingredients.

That’s why at Lashed Up & Beauty, we only stock organic products with nourishing ingredients that are gentle on your skin and support healthy hair growth.

Tip: Choose clean, high-quality beauty products where you can and always check expiry dates. If something smells off—ditch it.

🌿 A Simple Nightly Brow & Lash Growth Routine

If you’re ready to get serious about supporting growth, try this easy routine:

  1. Gently cleanse the eye and brow area using a mild cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and debris.

  2. Brush through brows and lashes with a clean spoolie (1–2 mins) to stimulate blood flow and support follicle health - be gentle!!!

  3. Apply a nourishing oil or peptide serum to your lashes and brows before bed. Great options include castor oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, or a lash-specific peptide serum.

⚠️ Be cautious using products not specifically designed for the eye area. Thick oils or comedogenic ingredients can clog pores and lead to irritation or block follicle function. Choose formulas made for lashes and brows.

4. Sleep on a silk or budget-friendly satin pillowcase. These materials reduce friction on the delicate eye area, helping to prevent hair breakage, thinning, and skin irritation.

5. Avoid sleeping face-down.
It’s best to sleep on your back—or position your face at the edge of the pillow—so your lashes don’t get squashed. Over time, consistent pressure can actually change the direction your lashes grow, especially if they’re always being pushed inward.

6. Stay consistent! This routine works best when done daily over several weeks.
